Blind or Deaf

If one or the other was going to happen to you. Which one would you choose? Me, I’d take being deaf over being blind. Not being able to see anything terrifies me. Especially if it happens later in life. Being born blind may be different. But in all reality, I cannot imagine that either. Not being able to see the brilliant colors of a sunset or the brightness of the sun. A loved one's face, or your grandkids playing ball.

Blind and On Your Own

Being blind and being on your own would not suit me well. I’d hear a noise and not be able to identify it. It’s scary enough with sight. I know one thing I’d do if my sight left me. I’d get a dog. My husband and I have dogs anyway. But if I were blind it would be a big dog. Protect and serve. A dog would be faithful and loyal. As well as a companion.

You Have to Deal

Let’s face facts neither one is a good choice. But what if it wasn’t a choice. It happened. Now you have to deal with either or. For me being blind is scarier. Not to make fun of anything but I cannot hear half the time anyway. I’m always forever saying what. But for someone who is blind and has been for life, you have to imagine the colors. If you’ve never seen red. How would you describe it? Vibrant, bold, in your face kind of color. Black or white wouldn’t matter because you do not look at another person that way, I believe if you are blind you depend on feel. You would feel a person's face to get an idea of what they look like. I’m just guessing here. Going blind would be something that would be hard to face. I guess you would see what you are made of. Would you fall to pieces? Maybe in the beginning you would. But, at some point pulling up your big girl panties would be what you would have to do. Face facts, make decisions. What will you do with the rest of your life? How is this going to alter the way you live? If it were me, I would go out less. I’d become a homebody. Walking around my house until I knew every square inch of it. Would not being able to see make your other senses stronger? I’m thinking it would. Your smell and your hearing would become noticeably sharper. Noises may seem amplified. Trapped inside your own mind would be a nightmare for me.

Do You Hear Me

Being deaf would be easier, at least for me. Like I said earlier my hearing has diminished slightly as it is. I love sign language, and a big perk would be you would never over hear anyone talking about you. You could live blissfully unaware what others think of you. This would not be a bad thing. The only bad thing would be you cannot hear yourself talk. So you wouldn’t know if you were talking too loud or too softly. Those around you could let you know. I’ve known deaf people and one of them was a neighbor to me many years ago. She was the sweetest girl. She had a little girl. I wonder whatever became of her. I’ve thought of her over the years. I still remember her name. I remember her phone. She had one for deaf people of course. Because she was deaf.

In this lifetime we face many obstacles. How we overcome them shows our character. We all hope we can get through this life without facing an extremely challenging one.

But what if it happens to you? What would you do?
