Race Day
Nine am this morning I ran the Buckshot Run in Eau Claire, WI. The temperature at the time of the race wasn’t too hot. It is supposed to reach a high of 90 today. Thank God the race was early. The sun was not out so that helped. There wasn’t a breeze so that didn’t help. It was a little on the muggy side. It was a five mile race. There weren’t a lot of hills, but there was a twisting, turning long sloping hill towards the end. It was never ending, and we had further to run. I just kept telling myself to keep going. No stopping for me. If I stop, I’ll think about it the whole year and have to prove to myself I can run it without stopping. That has happened before. Furthermore, I’ve proven I can run it. One thing I do have is endurance. Don’t ask me to sprint, but going the long mile is in my blood.
Let's Run
There were 97 runner's total. More women than men. There were only four in my age group. 60 to 69. A young 60-year-old beat me. But I also beat another 60-year-old. My time was 47:48. The 60-year-old that outran me had a time of 43:00. So she was four minutes ahead of me. Great run. Since I’m in my sixties crossing the finish line is the only goal I give myself. Although I did tell my husband I wanted to run it in less than an hour. That was no problem.
We Are All Different
We all run differently. I’m amazed at people’s running styles when running a race. All of us are different shapes and sizes, and we each have our own way of running.
The Older We Get the More We Need to Run
I’m super proud of anyone that runs. Crossing that finish line is an accomplishment that not everyone can do. Me, I will keep running until my body tells me it’s time to stop. So far that hasn’t happened. So, I’m thankful for that. I’ve seen people running in their 70’s and hoping I’ll be one of the lucky ones that can continue to do that. Being a runner most of my life I’ve never had knee, back, or feet problems. This in itself is a blessing. Since I’ve known plenty of people younger than me who have.
When's The Next One
I’m looking forward to the next race. There should be one coming up in October in Eau Claire. I’ll look online and see if I can sign up. The weather may be a little iffy in October. But I’ll be hoping it isn’t too cold or windy. I like a little breeze but not a strong wind in my face. That makes a hard run.
Hills Oh My
Until then I’ll keep on running daily. I make sure I do hills or steps because whatever race I’m in a race at some point you will have to run up a hill, trail or steps. I see many people stop and walk. Not me, I keep plugging away and make it up to the top. Pushing myself through it. Punishing my body is something I’m good at. So far it hasn’t let me down. Is a heart attack in my future? I’ll worry about that when it happens. Until then, I'll keep running.
See you at the next race!
