Ethan’s Book
I wrote a children’s book for my grandson Ethan. It was around five or so years ago. I made the mistake of going through a self-publisher. My bad. Had I known the outcome I never would have moved forward. But me being me I was so over the moon about actually publishing a book I didn’t give anything a second thought. Had I looked online at the self-publishing companies reviews I never would have taken a different route. They prey on naivety. The majority if not all of them are without souls.
It Doesn't Stop Ringing
To this day I receive telephone calls from people who say they want to help me with my book. It just sits on Amazon and wherever else my self-publishers decided to place it. No one buys it because why would they with the cost being so high?
Never From the United States
The phone calls I receive are never from anyone who speaks fluent English. I just received another one today. Same old, same old. They want to help me with my book. I never answer any of the calls. They come from all over the United States. The guy that called today didn’t sound like he was born and raised in Georgia. Matter of fact I had a hard time understanding what he was saying. I only know one thing for certain. That I will listen to the voicemail and then immediately after I will delete it. The gall and audacity of these people is beyond even my comprehension. Will they never give up?
Not Listening
When they first started calling, I would listen to their spiel. It inevitably ended up with them telling me for a small fee of perhaps a thousand or so dollars they would be glad to help me. After a while when they would call, I would tell them if it cost me money, I’m not doing it. That deterred many of them, but not all. Nope, they are persistent little buggers. Now I do not bother talking to them. They leave a voicemail and I delete it.
No Good
What kind of person do you have to be to take advantage of others? I’ve asked myself this time and again. Because there are many self-publishing companies out there willing to take your money if you let them. What is the saying? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. They will never get another chance with me. I learned my lesson the first time. If I see someone in a similar situation, I will let them know how dangerous and unwise it is to go through these companies. They are nothing more than a sham. Built specifically for taking your money. Live and learn. I did it the hard way.
If you love to write, open up a blog like I did. Many people make tons of money at it. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them but that’s ok. I have people who read my stories and enjoy them. That’s all that matters.
Sisters
What really matters is I followed my dream and I now have a blog I love. I write what I want. I have someone who critiques my work before it goes live. My sister Tammy. It’s almost a full-time job for her.
A lesson learned and memories kept. I still have a cherished book for my grandson. Did I make any money from it? Nope, but that’s ok. It was something I did just for him. A memory of his grandma for when I am no longer on this earth.
If you are like me and love to write, follow your dream. It’s glorious watching it unfold.
Keep an eye out for those who want your money. They are everywhere.
Trust me I know.
