Strange Weather
This winter in Wisconsin is the weirdest winter I've been through. Not that I'm complaining because I have been running outside for the entire winter, with the exception of a few snowy days. It's been fabulous. With no snow on the radar, the temps have been outstanding and unseasonably warm. I'll take it and I am hoping it continues.
Not Good for Farmers
The farmers do not like it, and I don't blame them. I am sure the ground is without moisture, making it hard to grow crop. Me, I say bring on the warm weather. 50's, 40's, I'll take whatever I can get. It beats 40 below any day.
I am 63 years old and have been running for over 40 years now. This is the very first time I've ever been able to say I've run outside through an entire Wisconsin winter. With three layers of shirts, a hat, and gloves I'm out the door. Since it's been so warm I tend to think about bears. Wondering if they too are out and enjoying this weather. I run in the country a lot, so the thought crosses my mind. I've seen deer, a skunk, and a couple of snakes but no bear. Thank you, Lord.
Most days when I run the sun is out. Even at 40 degrees with the sun, it feels warmer. Running in the fresh air and sun beat the heck out of climbing the stairs at home and getting on the treadmill. My nemesis. Looking at the same four walls and going nowhere. It's stifling and boring. Not my favorite thing to do.
Any other year my outside running normally ends the end of October, early November. As soon as we get a snow fall. Falling down and breaking something is not what I want to do.
Once In a Lifetime
Who knows if this will ever happen again in my lifetime. So, I plan on taking advantage of it now. I envy those who live with warm weather all year round. If they run it must be heaven. I live in Wisconsin after all, a state known for cold winters and icy roads. There will occasionally be a nice day of 20 degrees with sun. But it is not the norm. Roads are normally snow covered and slippery. Terrible conditions for runners. Although there are those die-hards who do it. I am not one of them.
I willl continue to run outside until it's impossible for me to do so. So far this winter that hasn't happened. It's crazy and fills me with a delighted sense of entitlement. After all I may never say this again in my lifetime. Running through February and on into March in Wisconsin. It's insane and I for one am thoroughly enjoying it. I revel in it, it soothes me and fills me with energy. For once I do not mind a Wisconsin winter.
Run Wendy run.
