Can You Sing
I’ll let you know right off the bat I cannot. I was once singing karaoke with a friend of mine, and when we were done her husband said. The only thing I could hear was Wendy singing off key. Duly noted. I’ve never attempted it again. In my defense there was drinking involved. That being said, I had no business being up on that stage. Had I been sober, it wouldn’t have happened.
He Can Sing
My son Jeremy (the guy on the left in the above photo) has a very good voice. He recorded a song in Nashville, at a recording studio by Blake Shelton for his wedding and he sounded amazing. Some people can sing, and others cannot. Those of us who can’t really do know we can’t sing.
Please Don't Sing
I remember one of my family members singing acapella at a funeral and I wanted to shrink down into my seat. It was so bad I felt sorry for them. It sounded kind of like a cat in heat. If you’ve ever heard that. Or two cats sparring. Waiting for it to be over was torture. I always wondered if they knew how bad they sounded. Of course, at a funeral there is no saying, oh my gosh can you hear what you sound like? Did you know you can’t sing? Your voice is horrid. You just smile and say that was lovely. When deep down inside I'm secretly hoping and praying I never have to relive that.
Garth and Dolly
A few of my personal favorites are Garth Brooks, and Dolly Parton. Both have amazing voices and I can sit and listen to them sing for hours. I have seen Garth in concert. Best show I’ve ever seen. Dolly I’ve never seen but I love her music as well as her personality.
Back to reality. Would voice lessons help? If you don’t have the right tone in the first place how can taking lessons help? Looking back to middle school I have a memory of our music teacher telling me to sing the Do-Re-Mi version so she could tell if I was a soprano or alto. By the look on her face, I was neither. My music career was over before it even started.
Not a Fan
It’s why I’m not a big fan of American Idol. I get embarrassed by the people who go on and cannot sing. Shouldn’t you be able to tell? Why go on tv and make a fool out of yourself? Unless it’s your dream. But dream something else because if you don’t have the voice you’ll go nowhere.
Dream of a Little Dream
I’m sure many people have had this dream quashed. They can be brutal in that show if you aren’t any good. I’ve had to turn the channel after watching some of them because I’m red in the face at home. I cannot imagine being there and feeling the humiliation. Please leave the singing to those who can sing. Absolutely no one wants to listen to someone who sucks at it.
There are no singers in my family. Not counting my son who I actually think could go on American Idol. He’s that good. Perhaps you think, oh that’s because I’m his mother. No, he’s been told by others he has a good voice. He doesn’t want to do anything about it. It’s his choice.
If you have a voice by all means dream your dream.
Singing, it’s for those who can do it.
