Soft Food
We have a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old dog. Finding the right dog food is hard, but I think I’ve finally nailed it. Hills Science dog food seems to be the answer. Ernie eats it up and enjoys it. Sally eats it but she loves her oatmeal in the morning with Gary. Both dogs were eating human food, which they love but it messed with Ernie’s digestive system, and his poop was not good. I’ve gone through numerous dog foods, they’ve both turned their noses up at some of them. We’ve tried foods that are natural, raw, and freeze dried. While they would eat it first, eventually they stopped eating it. They need soft food, Sally because of her age and teeth and Ernie because he has no teeth. He does have one molar in the back of his mouth. The vet didn’t have the heart to pull it because it was the only good tooth he had left after years of neglect.
The Search Is Over
The search for the right dog food has gone on for a year. Finally, I think it’s over.
Ernie has been itching a lot and I’m not sure if he has allergies or if it is a side effect from his levothyroxine he takes for his thyroid. It says it causes itching and redness. Both symptoms he experiences daily.
Maybe it’s time for his wellness check at the vet. He hasn’t been there in a while. Thank God, because we were there every other week when we first got him. He had many issues from years of neglect.
Let's Try This
Hills Science is the number one recommended food from Veterinarians. It’s formulated to meet the needs of dogs at various times in their lives. Older dogs need soft food, especially if they have no teeth.
No to Pedigree
We tried Pedigree, they both ate it for months and then suddenly didn’t want it anymore. I read the ingredients, and they were not the best. We gave the rest of it to our daughter for a treat for their dog. They have an Irish Creme Golden. She mixes it with his hard food.
It became exceedingly frustrating, wondering what we were going to feed our dogs. Hills Science isn’t the most expensive we have tried. But it isn’t the cheapest either. Right in the middle. I think we’ll stick with it. Done deal. My stress levels just went down.
Now to deal with Ernie’s itching. I did buy some medication shampoo for him. So far, he has had one bath with it. He still itches. Does it take a few baths before it works? Who knows, but I’ll keep bathing him in it for a while to see if it makes a difference.
There is always something when you have a dog. Thats life I guess, we take the good with the bad. The good outweighs the bad.
Always Rescues
There is nothing better than having a dog. Rescues are by far my favorite; I wish we could save them all. There are so many out there in need. People can be horrible, and dogs are normally at the receiving end of their ire. Don’t get a dog if you are going to tie him up on a chain and leave him or her. They deserve so much better. Feed them right, keep them in the house. Let them sleep with you. They love being around their people. They are loyal and forever happy to see us. We can be gone for five minutes, and they greet us like we’ve been gone for days. Wagging tails, wiggling bodies, and sloppy kisses.
Dogs, we love them over here.
