We All Fib

None of us are truthful all the time. We all tell little white lies. At times it is necessary in order to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. Answers to the questions, “Do these jeans make me look fat?” Or, “Is this a good haircut for me?” Many of us have a go-to response that is less than truthful.

It is the people who make their lifestyle revolve around their lies who we should worry about. Grandiose lies, leaving  people's lips without a second thought. There are people out there so skilled at not telling the truth, most of us do not recognize their lies. Smooth talkers, people who speak the untruth so many times to them it becomes the truth. There is a saying, if we lie often enough, that lie becomes the truth. We see it with politicians all the time. Promising this and swearing by that. But, once in office none of their so-called promises are remembered.

Every family member has someone who lies as easily as breathing. It’s their way of life. Lending them money or co-signing for them is nothing we should even entertain.

How Do We Know

How do we know if someone is not telling us the truth? Some say if they look to the left while speaking it is a dead giveaway. Other times people fidget, or yawn, acting nervous and sweating as they stretch the truth. Others are calm and we see no outward signs. These are the people we all should be wary of. They will sell us lakeside property in the desert. Caught unaware many elderly people are taken advantage of this way. Give me your cash and I’ll deliver a car. With no car in sight money exchanges hands and the grifter is gone in a split second-vanished along with the cash never to be seen again. The person taken advantage of is left shaking their head in puzzlement. I’ve seen it happen.

The Great Liar

The accomplished liar is one who tells believable lies. They lie as easily as we breathe. Their skill set is so honed and polished we notice no deception. When confronted with a lie they act shocked and oftentimes angry as if to say how dare you call me a liar. Denying all lies these type of people have low self esteem, are often unsure of themselves, and may have a slight personality disorder. In addition, they have lied so many times they do not know where their lies end and the truth begins. The greatest manipulators, they bend and twist the truth to their satisfaction.

A dishonest friend talks way too much and ultimately says too little. Defensive and inconsistent they try to please by judging others. Never a good sign. If we can’t trust our friends to tell us the truth, who can we trust?

Fibbers

Fibbers, the slight liars. They tell what they think of as innocent fibs. The kind of lie that will cause no damage. It won’t hurt anyone, or inflict pain. Like the accomplished liar, a fibber cannot help but fib. Stories that are simple become complex and embellished. A half truth is not the truth.

Is it that hard telling the truth, or do people get high off of not telling the truth? Judging our facial expressions makes them smirk. They think they have really got one over on us. When in reality we recognize their inability to speak the truth. (Sometimes)
