It’s Coming

a large storm cloud looms over a green field

It’s summer in Wisconsin and that means thunderstorms. Possible tornadoes, lightning lighting up the sky. Dark clouds scattered throughout the sky. I love thunderstorms. Tornadoes are a different story. I’d love to see one, but not get close to one. I’ve lived long enough where we’ve had a couple tornadoes. I’ve seen garages collapse across the street and a trailer court demolished. Tornadoes are nothing to mess around with. Like my husband Gary says, "get in the basement “. I’m always the last one down there because I’m looking out the window trying to see if I can catch a glimpse of a tornado. So far, I haven’t been lucky, some may say I have been lucky. I’ve yet to get a look at a tornado. Seeing them on tv isn’t the same. To see one in real life would be amazing and slightly terrifying. I just want one glimpse and then I’ll head down to the basement.

Dirty Basement

Gary waits in the basement with the dogs. I’ll only stay down there for a certain amount of time if nothing is happening. I'm back upstairs, once again looking out the windows. And yes, I know you are supposed to stay away from windows during storms, but did I tell you I listen to no one. Me peeking out the window hoping for a look at one of nature's greatest threats. Can you imagine? They have always been the elusive thing that got away from me. Like I said I’ve lived through two of them but never did get a look at the tornado itself.

Devastation All Over

The destruction afterwards is something my husband and I drive around and look at. The most common thing we see tipped and, in someone else’s yard, are trampolines. Doesn’t anyone stake them down. While being slightly on the heavy side they are no match for a tornado.  Gary and I saw them everywhere. Out in fields, blown across the street landing on top of the house next door. Their legs all askew. Looking like a disjointed daddy-long legs.

Tornadoes can and are devastating for any city. The destruction they cause knows no boundaries. Entire cities have been flattened and needed to be rebuilt because of tornadoes.

Force of Nature

Thunderstorms will forever be a favorite of mine. The loud claps of thunder and the streaks of lightning. Some say God is bowling up there. The thunder is harmless although lightning is another story. It strikes and oftentimes is deadly. Do not be out on the field playing a ballgame during a thunderstorm. A lightning strike kills. It’s happened and that is exactly why there are rules enforced at baseball games. If there is lightning spotted the game is over and everyone leaves the field. You can never be too safe. There are rules for a reason. People have died.

The Calm Before the Storm

If you are like me and love storms there may be many different reasons. Perhaps they soothe your already chaotic mind. Thunderstorms help me sleep. While they may wake some people up out of a dead sleep, they can also put you to sleep.

Let's Watch

I’ve just had notification on my phone there is a severe thunderstorm brewing in the area we live in. That means it will be a good night for gazing at the sky out on our deck. Gary and I love to sit out there and watch the clouds roll by. The thunder crack and the lightning light up the sky. We stay out there until we get driven inside by the rain.

Will there be a tornado tonight? Most likely not. I’ll still enjoy the storm.

I’ll keep my eye on the sky. It’s funnel season!
