Spooky
Do you love Halloween? Ghosts, goblins, fake blood, haunted houses. The list goes on and on. I love spooks and scary things. Gary and I go to haunted houses, corn mazes, and whatever else we can find to do.
Small Town Antics
A little town near us has a haunted trail every year. Gary and I decided to check it out. We stood in line for an hour before we got in but once we were on the trail it was worth it. It scared me, with people jumping out of bushes with knives and chainsaws. We went through a house and as we’re about to exit a witch jumps out and scares the crap out of Gary. I laughed so hard. It was fun. Not the most fun I’ve ever had but Gary and I both enjoyed it.
I’ve been on hayrides, ran through corn mazes. Corn mazes can be scary also. Especially at night. You can get lost in them. Twists and turns and soon you have no idea where you are, or better yet how you get out of the maze.
Pumpkin carving. Contests to see whose design is the best. When really, you’d love to pick all of them because you don’t want anyone to feel bad.
Blacker than Black
Halloween is about darkness. Kids go trick or treating in the dark. How old do you have to be before you don’t go trick or treating? I can recall big kids coming to my door when I handed out candy. Never mind about having a costume. They just held out a bag wanting the candy. What happened to dressing up?
I worked below a nursing home and dressed up for Halloween. I had to go distribute medications and I know I scared some of the residents.
Halloween is all about being scared. The scarier the better. We all love to be scared, don't we? Some of us yes. My grandson who is ten isn’t so thrilled about it. He will not do haunted houses or trails. He loves to be at home handing out candy. You have to be careful now because accepting homemade treats is no longer acceptable because people have put glass shards in fudges they’ve made, and razor blades in candy. It isn’t all sweet and innocent like it used to be back in the day. Leave it to people to ruin a good thing.
The witches with their black hats and broomsticks. The black cats roaming the streets. It’s all deliciously frightening. The spooky girls sitting on the swings, the stuffed scarecrows who turn out to be a real person.
Scary Movies
Michael Myers, who can forget him. The first Halloween movie scared the bejesus out of me. Jamie Lee Curtis. Then once again people ruined it by making too many of the movies. I believe a new one still comes out every year. I cannot watch them anymore. The older I get the more scared I get. It’s crazy but true.
Every year at the end of October you will find the little ones going door to door. Trick or treat. The treats get doled out and the tricks get forgotten. Bags of candy, kids make quite a haul with suckers, Baby Ruth’s, Hershey bars, gummies. You name it, they have it. Around this time of year it is also caramel apple season. Oh my. Deliciously decadent. I love Caramel apples. The gooey sweetness of the caramel and the tartness of the apple.
We wish we could all be kids again for Halloween. Collecting candy and visiting haunted houses. Or driving around with your parents looking at all the Halloween decorations people put out. It’s a slice of heaven.
So, to all the kids out there get your costumes on, go get your candy.
Stuff your face! Tis the season.
