I Run
Normally I will run rain or shine. Today it was raining. Only going three miles made it an easy run. It wasn't raining when I first started out, but it started sprinkling soon after. My thought was I can handle the sprinkles, it actually felt nice. It’s been in the high 80’s here in Wisconsin. Not that I’m complaining. Not me, I’ll take it. The rain started coming down harder after I was halfway done with my run. What was I to do except keep running.
Races
The day before I was in a 10k in Eau Claire, WI. It was humid and sticky. My race started at 8am. The temperature continued to increase as I ran. It took me one hour and three minutes to complete the race. By this time, it was hot! The run wasn’t my best run, but I made it across the finish line. That’s all that mattered. The course was hard, there were a lot of hills making the heat seem even hotter. Many people stopped and walked the hills. Not me, I kept going. Once I start a race, stopping and walking is not in my vocabulary. To continue running until I cross the finish line is my goal. Seeing the six-mile marker made me very happy. The .2 after that was a piece of cake.
Easy Rainy Run
My run today (Sunday) in the rain was much easier than my run in the race on Saturday. The rain felt good, making it not only cooler but more enjoyable as well. The water ran across the road at some point splashing my shoes. When I returned home, I was drenched but happy. It was a nice run. My husband Gary met me to see if I wanted a ride when I was halfway done. I told him no the rain feels good and kept on running.
I'm Thankful I Can Run
Running in the rain or running in the sun, the fact I am out running is all I care about. Me, being sixty-three. If I can lace up my shoes, head out the door and run it makes my day complete. Walking our rescue dog Ernie starts my morning. We walk for usually an hour or hour and fifteen minutes. It’s a nice walk, we take our time, Ernie sniffs everywhere and we both get our exercise. Returning home, I’ll wait for an hour then lace up my shoes and head out the door for my run. Depending on how I feel sometimes I’ll run uptown. These runs can be anywhere from 4 to 8-mile runs. Country running is the best, and I do have a five to five and a half run I do down gravel roads and wooded areas. Cattle and horses are two animals I see often on these runs.
Running in the rain as long as it’s not lightening is something that I love. It does not deter me from letting my feet hit the pavement. Today there was thunder, but no lightning lit up the sky. Making my run safe and enjoyable. Plus, we needed the rain, it’s been so dry, a good soaking would be the cure and that’s what we got. Gary is happy because he mows businesses uptown and it’s been so dry, he hasn’t had to mow.
Back to running. Whether running in the rain or sunshine, just getting out there and doing it makes you a superstar in my book. There are so many people who run, and I am proud of every single one of them. It has been a part of my life for so long, I am not sure what I would do if it suddenly became an impossibility for me. It would be one of the most tragic moments in my life. I’d be lost, set adrift with no compass. Not something I wish to think about or ponder over.
So, for now I lace 'em up and head out the door. See you all on the blacktop.
