Just Read

Reading is such a fundamental important thing to teach your child. Start them out young, reading to them while they are in the womb. It is never too early to start. Stressing the importance of reading is something I will do until I'm blue in the face. Children learn faster if they are taught to read before they start school. Ahead of the game their little minds soak up knowledge like a sponge. Everything will come easier for them. Read to them in the morning or read to them at night. As they age, have them read to you. There are so many books out there designed to help them. Utilize the library-take your kids to story time. Get them a library card or let them use yours. Have them check out books and return them. Give them your love of books. Or if you are not a book lover, cultivate that love in them. It will give them that edge, tell them opening up a book is like going to Neverland. There are all kinds of possibilities, dreams, laughter, hope, and best of all learning inside a book cover. Help them discover that. Better yet discover it with them. Instill a deep love of reading with your child.

A Part of My Life

I’ve been reading since I was a kid. Not having the best home life there were plenty of times I lost myself inside a book. Taking me away from my grim reality, books were treasures for me. Reading led into writing, which led into storytelling. Making up tales to tell your grandkids off the top of your head isn’t the easiest thing to do. I did it for years with Ethan, my second grandson. He loved the stories I told him about a little boy named Josiah. He always asked for more. My storytelling soon turned into writing a book about a little boy named Josiah. I ended up writing a book for all three of my grandkids. Thankful I do not have a handful more, three was enough. Maliki’s was the last, since he was already an adult when his was printed off, he can save it for his own son. All three were children’s books. My love of books will remain with me until the day I am no longer on this earth. It will die with me. I am a frequent visitor to our library here in town.

Books are Gifts

Kids need to read. They need to learn and grow. Reading should be an essential part of their growing up. Give your child a book for Christmas. Or their birthday, or anytime. If you are having a hard time getting them to read. Buy them a joke book, make them laugh. Buy them a book where they can illustrate and design what they think the book is about. Make it interesting for them. Kids often get bored if not stimulated.

Book clubs are a good idea for a kid. Libraries may have them. Take them to the library often, let them search out a book. The library is one of my favorite places in the world.

Let them decide what type of book they like. Are they a fan of mystery and intrigue? Maybe they love stories about adventure and action. There are so many different categories they can choose from. Their little minds will be spinning with excitement. Teach them to be gentle with the books, no torn pages or losing their book. Responsibility comes along with reading. Hold them accountable, valuable lessons learned.

Give Them an Advantage

To not read to your child puts them at a disadvantage. They will be slower to learn, fall behind in school. Not reaching their full potential because they lack the knowledge. It is a proven fact that kids who were read to prior to attending school are more apt to excel at their studies. Give your child that advantage. Help them be a better person. Their young mind is yours to mold. Do it the right way. You only have one shot at it, make it count. Let them breathe books.

Instill in your child a love of books. It will last a lifetime. I know mine did.

Love yourself, love a book.
