Fairy Tales

Who doesn’t like fairy tales? Peter Pan Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, and Wendy. The Brothers Grimm, Hansel and Gretel.

Fairy tales captivate and enthrall. We, as kids, have all sat and listened as someone read the story about a little boy who never grew up. Fairy tales take us out of our ordinary lives and transport us to a different world. A world where anything is possible, and nothing is impossible. Reach for the stars, grab on and enjoy the ride. Aladdin and his magic carpet ride. A child's eyes, filled with hope, wonder and awe, flying through the skies isn't an impossibility, it is a certainty.

Genies and wizards, fascinate as well as scare.

Who Doesn't love them?

Little Red Riding Hood. Who would have thought about a big bad wolf? Going to visit Granny through the woods, the wolf was there before Little Red Riding Hood, and attempted to hoodwink her. In different versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood gets eaten by the wolf, never discovering his true identity. In other versions, a woodcutter comes to the rescue, cuts open the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood emerges from his belly along with her Granny, shaken but not hurt. Believe whichever one that makes sense in your imagination. Or none at all, make up a different ending. We all believe what we want to believe.

Many fairy tales do not have happy endings. Maybe that is why we all believe. Life doesn’t always have happy endings either.  Fairy tales are written truer to life than we’d like to think.

Above The Clouds

Jack and the Beanstalk. The giants living up above the clouds. Imagine planting beans and having something grow so tall that part of it is hidden above the clouds. Climbing would be impossible not to do, who doesn’t want to see what’s up there? Curiosity killed the cat, but not Jack.

Stretch Your Imagination

Hansel and Gretel are in terrible danger, if not for Gretel's quick thinking they would have been killed. Having the witch demonstrate how to get into the oven saved her and her brother. She pushed the witch into the oven and slammed the door. We all breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Let's Believe

I believe we all have a desperate need to believe in something-adults and kids alike. A fairy tale can make us believe. Another great fairy tale is The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is not only written for kids but adults also. One we can all cry, commiserate, and bond over.

Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Where does it stop? I’m hoping nowhere, may Writers continue to make our world a better place with their stories spun out of cotton candy and magic.

We all need something to hang onto, to dream about. Fairy tales do this for us. In a land far away there is a castle, inside the castle lives a princess, and so the story goes. Let's all live to believe. Look at this world through a child's eyes. Where anything is possible, the sky can be green, and the grass can be blue. If we believe it enough it may come true.

Who Doesn't Love This One?

Last but certainly not least is The Wizard of Oz. The very first fairy tale ever written and produced. None of us will forget Dorothy, Toto, the Tinman, the Lion, and the Scarecrow. Not to mention the Wicked Witch of the West, the flying monkeys, and the yellow brick road. This fairy tale caught everyone’s attention and kept it. It is the tale of all tales. One we won’t soon forget after watching. The wizard himself is great and wise. Hiding behind a curtain, he turns out to be an ordinary man who has no tricks up his sleeve. Although he does have a heart and courage to spare and is instrumental in getting Dorothy home where she belongs. The Wizard of Oz has to be my favorite fairy tale. A classic, legendary and memorable for all who watch it.

Let’s all believe in the unbelievable. The world may be a better place if we do.
