Is depression a thing? Yes, it is. What would you do if you found the above poem in your daughters or your sons' possession? Would you be worried? Would you be overly concerned?

Unlovable

a man is holding his hair in the air

Such thoughts are common among people who are depressed. Feelings such as being unlovable, worthless, unseen, and unwanted. These words resonate in a person's heart. They aren’t foolish nor typical and should not be ignored. It is often a cry for help. The suicide rate for young people has decreased, while for people 25 and older, has increased.

Suicide Hotline

There are many programs available to help, if help is wanted. Most often if someone decides to kill themselves, they will not tell a soul. Instead, they will quietly take their own life. The world is fractured and not in a good way. Bullying is on the rise; social media has made a shattering impact on the lives of many. Hate filled talk and bullying go hand in hand on social media. If I were raising kids now there is no way I’d let them be close to social media. It will be the downfall of us all.

A Better Day

Pulling up your bootstraps doesn’t always work. Sometimes the problems lie deeper than that. Tough love isn’t always the way. There is nothing sadder than a 14-year-old male or female who thinks tomorrow will not be a better day. Then placing a gun in their mouth and ending it all. How can someone so young have those thoughts? The crumbling of today's society is directly correlated. Parents not listening to their kids, either being too busy with work or just not taking the time. The breakdown of family values. Too many people rush to get here and get there when the real place they should be is beside their kids. Two income families leave many kids alone for hours after school. Entirely too much time on their hands to think about the bad stuff that’s happening to them.

Is there a way out of this for all of us?  Is there a viable solution within our grasp? Do any of us have the fortitude to help solve this crushing problem?

A Long-Ago Childhood

It is as old as time itself. Self-doubt and depression have been around for ages. It is only more prevalent now because of tv, social media, and the internet. Kids as young as 7 or 8 with a cellphone? Why? What is so pressing in their young lives, or so urgent that they need a phone? I remember my childhood. It was spent outside. We were forever outside. We didn’t have phones, we had friends.

We all need to stay diligent. We all need to be aware of what is right under our noses.
