It Really Does
It takes all kinds of people to make the world go around. Since I’ve started retail, I’ve seen plenty of them. I know they say Walmart has the strangest people. Where I work could rival Walmart and knock it right off the top of the chart.
Me No Money
A guy came in tonight and had twelve dollars. His order came to more than that so I was voiding the items off he could live without like the bag of potato chips and the candy. We finally got it under twelve and he did receive some change back. The next lady I had was a replica of the guy. She had to put money on her account on her phone, she said. She went outside (because the reception in the store sucks) and came back in and decided she didn’t want any of the kid's hangers she had gotten. Once again, I’m voiding 4 items off of her list.
Is it just me or should people know how much money they have and act accordingly? Don't come up to the register and ring up purchases you cannot afford to pay for. I do remember those days, counting every penny. Making sure I had enough to pay for my groceries. I always made sure I had the money before I went up to the register. Once again maybe it’s just me, but it seems the responsible thing to do.
Too Soon
It is only April in Wisconsin; people have been coming in with tank tops on and shorts. Leggings seem to be the choice for most who shop where I work. Some people shouldn’t wear leggings. That doesn’t seem to stop them though. With leggings you can see every dimple and ripple. Trust me, look in the mirror before you leave the house. Or maybe they just don’t care what people think. Or perhaps even better, they think they look good in skintight leggings. Leggings were made I believe for thin people. Although many people who are heavier wear them mostly for comfort.
One woman came in with so much make-up on. I was wondering if Halloween came early this year. She was an older woman and maybe her eyesight was bad and she didn’t realize how much make-up she had on before she left the house. Or once again maybe she liked it like that. To each his or her own, I guess.
Yesterday at work was friends' day as I saw a lot of former co-workers and people I knew. It was nice catching up.
Have You Been Drinking
Once in a while someone comes in smelling of liquor. They aren't buying any, because I wouldn’t sell him any. But they eventually ask for help. The aroma is strong coming off them. They aren't acting drunk, so I think maybe it was from the night before and they didn’t brush their teeth before they came in. Most times, I cannot shut them up and they volunteer information about what they are shopping for and information I don't need to know about their other half. I'd be better off not knowing. Also, apparently everything is extremely funny. After 15 minutes of listening to him I tell him good luck finding what he wants and go back to work.
There Are Thieves All Around Us
I’m not sure why but people steal. Finding open empty boxes in the store jammed underneath other items is something I’ve come across more than once. It baffles me. We have mini six packs of sodas. I found a five pack on the shelf because obviously someone came in, took a soda off the six pack and put it in their pocket and walked out the door with it. People have a lot of nerve. Apparently, he or she must have been thirsty.
People watching is what I do, and where I work gives me plenty of opportunity. What I find strange and unusual someone else may find normal and acceptable. We all walk our own way through life.
Just so you know, if you come in when I’m working chances are I’ll try and figure you out. Especially if it’s a thirty-degree day and you come in with a pair of shorts, a tank top, and flip flops on.
Live and let live.
