It Matters
First impressions matter. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. The way you dress, the way you act, how you look. It all comes into play.
Job Interviews
A job interview comes to mind. Dressing appropriately is a must. No one wants to hire anyone with a slovenly, sloppy I don’t care appearance. Furthermore, tattoos, piercings, all can influence a future employer in an initial first interview. The way you come across is essential. Sitting with arms crossed may make it seem as if you are closed off-not open to suggestions or advice.
You need to make a conscious effort to appear open and willing to be a part of a team. Most jobs are group efforts. It takes a team of people to produce a finished product.
Someone with a poor attitude and even poorer work ethic will not get the job. If they do get hired they will not last long before they quit or get fired. Either way, making a great first impression right out of the gate makes a big difference.
I do believe everyone has known a co-worker who will not be there for the long run. Their constant complaining right off the bat is a big signal. Also asking for days off a week after starting is not good practice. Although employers now are good about asking if you have any days needed off before hiring. Many will work with you, but there are some who will not.
In addition, with the state of the world now-many people should be thankful they have a job to go to.
Work From Home
With modern technology people now work from home. What a privilege. Getting out of your pj’s is optional. Growing up in the sixties and seventies this was not even an option. With work came long hours, low pay, strict rules, and not much vacation. But back then you were glad you had a job. Many started a job shortly after graduation. No college, no extra schooling of any kind. Working eight plus hours a day without complaint.
The world did a 360 and is no longer the same. The good has to outweigh the bad-otherwise there is no chance for any of us.
There Are No Hand-Outs
Do our younger generation expect things handed to them? Entitlement is a huge statement. With both parents working, spending money on clothes, athletic gear, and the “right” shoes isn’t a hardship like it used to be.
What happened to being proud of the job you have? Being proud you have a job.
Why?
There are so many people on SSI, and short-term and long-term Disability. Not just older people but the young too. Working in Law Enforcement most of my career I witnessed many young people come to the jail saying they did not work but received help from the government. Many of them were young people in their twenties.
Let's Find Some Answers
What is the answer? Some say morals, old fashioned values, need to come back. Family structure is not the same. A one working parent household barely exists anymore. It takes two parents working to maintain a lifestyle. Making many kids “latch key kids.”
Try being a parent and not a friend. Parenting is hard as it is. Divorce only complicates things. The kids pitting one parent against the other. Kids aren’t dumb.
Teaching kids respect is huge. There seems to be an “I deserve this” because I am on this earth attitude. Or, I shouldn't have to worry because my parents will pay for it. Many young people today have no concept of money.
A first impression counts in so many different ways. Teach your child to be kind, courteous, and polite. It will get them so much further in this world. Know when to speak and when to stay silent. Above all, teach them to have a strong work ethic, and to respect others.
Trust me, first impressions DO matter.
