Prayers For Ernie
Today is the day Ernie has his surgery. We dropped him off at the vet at 8:15. Neutering, a distemper shot and closing the hole in his mouth. We really need this to be his last visit so we can get on with our lives. Mostly, so Ernie can get on with his life.
Now What?
The vet’s assistant called at 10:45 and told us Ernie did very well. He is walking around in his kennel as I write this. She asked me if I noticed his tongue was kind of a purple color. I told her no, and asked her why? She explained it has to do with his airway and him not getting enough air. I asked her if something was lodged in his throat-she told me no. She then went on to say she wanted to monitor him and make sure he was breathing normal before we picked him up. His tongue should be a healthy pink color. We can’t pick him up until 2:45 pm. If anything, further should happen she will give me a call. She gave me a heads up on the cost of his procedures, I thanked her, and we hung up.
Bad Luck
If Ernie didn’t have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. First a seizure, then an enlarged prostate, and now his airway. What else can happen to this little 13-pound dog who has suffered so needlessly his entire life? It doesn’t seem fair.
The Cone Of Shame
He will be wearing the cone when he comes home for further humiliation. He will not be able to walk for a while. His favorite activity in the world.
Let's Be Positive
On a brighter note he came through the surgery with flying colors. He is a tough dog. He hasn’t been loved his entire life; it’s time to change that. He has been with us a little over a month and we have shown him more love in that time, than he has received since he was born. He follows me everywhere. If I’m in the shower he is right outside the door whining. His favorite place is on the loveseat with me and his blanket. He loves a blanket we have and sleeps on it nightly on our bed. He is not a cuddler when he sleeps, he isn’t used to anyone cuddling with him, so we let him sleep where he pleases.
Now we wait until 2:45 pm. We can’t wait to bring him home, praying that everything is good with his airway.
So, God if you are up there listening there is a little dog down here who needs you.
