Safe At Last

Today was Ernie’s vet appointment. We had him there before 9:30 am. We spoke to the veterinarian for a while. She couldn’t check Ernie’s mouth because it was so bad. She said she didn’t want to torture him any more than he already is being tortured. I thanked her.

Massive Infection

The vet said Ernie is fighting off a massive infection with his teeth. She had all his records with her and told us she spoke to his last vet, so she knows all about his mouth. Along with his infection, he is also anemic. His red blood cell count is low. While trying to fight off his infected mouth, he became anemic. They drew blood from Ernie; the vet said she would know the results tomorrow and would call me.

Ernie needs a distemper shot, but she said not while he’s fighting off this infection. He also needs to be groomed, but that also has to wait.

What Is In His Jaw?

She also told me she may have felt something on his lower jaw but couldn’t tell if it was tartar or something else. She will not know until they take x-rays.

This poor little guy has a lot going on in his body due to neglect. Right now, he is asleep on our king-size bed.

Come On Sally

Gary has our barn doors shut to the bedroom, so Sally cannot get in. She is not being neighborly, and Ernie’s mouth is hurting him, so there cannot be a confrontation of any kind. Sally, being Sally, found herself locked in the kennel so Gary and I could have a break. She sat and barked as if to say how dare you!

Long Walks

But the good news is Ernie is safe at home with us; he enjoyed two long walks today, and he had a few soft treats. The best information is he has surgery for his teeth this Friday. Ernie needs to be at the clinic at 8:00 am, and we pick him up any time after 3:30 pm. He is going to feel so much better. It will be a long week for us here with Sally, but Ernie is worth every grey hair we get. Hopefully, Sally mellows out as the week goes on.

First Day Jitters

Today was his first day with us; it was an adjustment for all of us. More so for Ernie, we removed him from the home he lived at for years. No matter how bad their home life is, dogs do not like change. We did bring one toy with us, and he was excited to see something familiar. He is such a sweet dog.

We are looking forward to many happy years with Ernie.

Day 1 is almost over. We look forward to a better day tomorrow for Ernie, Sally, Gary, and me. We did not know when he was born, so we decided that today (January 2nd) was his birthday. The first day he spent with us, so happy birthday, Ernie!

Stay tuned for more updates on Ernie.
