Let's Talk About Ernie
It's been almost two weeks since Ernie's surgery. He is a new dog. Playtime, eating, and walks are his favorite things.
Ernie's teeth are gone except for one molar way in the back, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying life. He is a sweet, loving dog.
Home At Last
I believe he finally feels at home here. What surprises me most is Sally's behavior. Our Jack Russell, the one who does not play well with other dogs. Ernie is not afraid of her which is a good thing. He will go nose to nose with her and not flinch. He sniffs her constantly, and she does nothing. She hasn't gone after him in days. Ernie and Sally run out in the yard together. Wherever she goes, he follows. Noses to the ground. They may become best friends. There is nothing that warms my heart more than that.
After twelve long years of having no one to love, Ernie has turned into a snuggle bunny. He snuggles with me on the couch until he gets too warm. His favorite thing is our king size bed, there is plenty of room for all four of us.
Walks
He gets walked twice a day. I always tell him we are making up for 12 years when he didn't get walked. We walk for an hour and a half. He doesn't tire and sometimes is not ready to be done after that length of time. But enough is enough. I think that's a long walk. he is 12 after all.
The Vet
Friday at 9 am is his vet appointment. Hopefully everything checks out, and we can get on with our lives. The vet will see a different dog when we bring him in-no more pain when he yawns; just a happy, playful dog.
Ernie Forever Home
Dogs amaze me with their resilience, they have so much love in their hearts. They can teach us, humans, a thing or two about humanity.
However long we have Ernie, it will never be long enough. His sweet temperament and disposition will remain remembered long after he is gone. The struggle he has gone through is a thing that stays in the past. His future shines brightly, with an entire yard to explore in the Spring and many more walks ahead of him.
Ernie has finally found a home. Not just a house that he lives in but a home. Believe me, there is a difference.
Side note: Soon after writing this there was an incident with Sally and Ernie. No one was hurt, but it happened just the same. Sally went after Ernie. It was short but he does not deserve it. I believe dogs forget about it soon after it occurs. Ernie was back to sniffing Sally's back end like nothing happened. Praying for an end to Sally's troubling behavior. But it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
