Not Yet
My husband Gary and I live in the country. Our closest neighbor is two fields away from us, which suits us fine. Until one day I looked out the window and noticed five vehicles staking out the field closest to us. I told Gary I thought someone was building a house next to us. My husband looked out the window and recognized one of the people he said, "I think you are right."
Stay Away
Living in the country with neighbors far and few between is what country living should be. Gary and I do not want neighbors close to us. Not that we are solitary people, but we do enjoy the fact that living in the country means no close neighbors. The house that will be built is definitely too close.
We are not sure who the people are who will be moving in because construction hasn’t even begun. Dirt has been brought in and leveled out but that is about it.
Now we feel as if we have to move. All kidding aside, I've seriously thought about it.
There Goes Our Privacy
We have a hot tub outside on our deck. Now my husband is building a privacy fence so we will have a certain amount of privacy while enjoying the tub. We never had to worry about that before, our neighbors were far enough away. There are so many perks about not having close neighbors. Not worrying about raising our voices if we get into an argument, afraid the neighbors will overhear. Not that Gary and I argue often but no one gets along all the time.
We have dogs and now will worry if they are outside barking, they will disturb the neighbors. This was never a problem before. Dogs bark, but we do not know the people who are moving in whether this would be an issue for them. Since Gary and I are in our sixties moving most likely will not be an option.
No Parties
So, we are hoping for neighbors who like to keep to themselves. Neighbors who won’t bother us, and we will return the favor. Not someone who wants to have neighborhood parties. They are not really our thing. Or a neighbor who constantly is coming over to borrow one thing or another. Or simply a neighbor who just simply stops by every time we turn around. Where we live everyone mostly keeps to themselves. I have been here with Gary for ten years and we have been to a neighbor for a bonfire one time. That is what it is like here and Gary and I don’t mind it at all. We both love the solitude of the country. Waking up to see an eagle perched in the tree, or a raccoon waddling down the road. Deer crossing the field next to us heading into the woods nearby. Something that will not happen after the house is built. Rabbits under the sheds in our yard. For Gary and I our place is a paradise. There is nothing we enjoy more than sitting on the patio or the deck, in silence or having a conversation. Dogs at our feet. No sidewalks or people constantly walking by. No looking out our windows directly into the window of the house next door.
Now We Wait
So, now it’s a waiting game. The house hasn’t been started so maybe we are jumping the gun a little bit. Not knowing who our new neighbors will be. Not sure I even like the sound of that. Nothing to do but wait and see what transpires. Our best neighbors are our neighbors to the north of us. A cemetery. No noise, no loud parties. Just how we like it.
Will we be lucky again? Time will tell. Until then Gary and I will enjoy the peace and quiet.
