Wisconsin Weather
We have a temperature right now of minus three degrees. It is too damn cold to go outside. My dog Ernie cannot figure out why he isn’t going on his morning walks. His tongue hangs out, it would freeze if I walked him in this weather. It is a deep freeze here. Nothing good about it. I think about the animals outside in this cold and I feel bad for them. I’m praying there are no dogs outside. (I choose to believe there isn’t). Am I delusional? Most likely, but it’s the only way I can think to keep my sanity. What man or woman in their right mind would keep a dog outside in this cold? There within lies the truth. Anyone in their “right” mind wouldn’t do it. People that do this should not have a dog or any animal for that matter.
Is There an End in Sight
We are on day two of the cold snap. There is an end in sight. Alexa tells me Saturday and Sunday the temps will be back to normal. Normal for this time of year anyway. 20’s possibly even 30’s. That is the weather I can deal with. It’s warm enough to walk Ernie. He gets his walk in along with me. We both feel happier and more settled if we walk in the morning. The morning is Ernie’s time and he makes good use of it. Sniffing to his delight as we walk. Nose to the ground and go. It gives him an appetite when we get back home. He’s ready for breakfast and then playtime. Once that’s over he settles in for a nap.
Every Winter we have to deal with at least one week of below zero weather. It would be nice if it skipped a year now and then. I for one wouldn’t miss it at all. Stuck in the house with nothing to do is boring. Unless I have a good book to read, or something to clean, scrub, or dust boredom sets in.
It looks like the sun is trying to shine. But stick your nose out the door. You will quickly pull it back in. It’s a deep freeze out there. Frostbite and black feet and fingers come to mind.
The New Year
I’m always glad when January has come and gone. February is a short month. Although it is leap year this year so we have one more day. March can be nice, but it normally snows in March. Comes in like a lion and at times goes out the same way. Why do we live in this godforsaken part of the country? Grandkids, family, small towns, and country living. Besides the fact my husband Gary loves Wisconsin. He loves small towns. I could live somewhere where there was no winter. It wouldn’t bother me a bit.
Long Winter nights with the wind blowing and howling makes me long for summer nights. Lazy summer days with nothing to do but enjoy the weather. The sun is high in the sky. The sky is clear as can be. The green grass, the horse and buggy driving by. Small town mentality. It is a thing. It thrives in the city we live in. People do not want change. They love the sameness, the constant, the fact that one day bleeds into another and nothing changes except the sun and the moon. It’s an accepting, calmness that soothes their souls.
Snap, and back to our reality. Winter pushes itself on us. We have no choice. We just grin and bear it. The unrelenting winds, the blowing snow and the frigid temps. It’s second to none with its fierceness. Bringing us to our knees praying for warmer days.
My sister Tammy in the above photo. Escaping the cold and enjoying a snuggle with her dog. It doesn't get any better does it? Hopefully she doesn't mind me stealing this photo and showing her to the world.
Watch out for Wisconsin. It sucks you in with its beautiful Summertime charm. Fall colors lure us with their beauty. Leaving us spellbound, enraptured and enchanted.
Then Winter slams us, slaps us in the face. But there’s nowhere else we’d want to live.
Or is there?
