How Daring are You?
Are you a daredevil? Does the thought of scaling the Grand Canyon sound exciting to you? Or climbing Mount Everest all the way to the peak. Neither one of them seem enjoyable to me. The riskiest job I’ve ever had was being a Correctional Officer. There is an element of danger in the job. Being stabbed with a shiv, or attacked by an inmate who doesn’t like being where he or she is. Luckily, I survived my years in Law Enforcement whiteout being stabbed. I have had my share of tussles with people coming in off the street or someone who is already incarcerated. It’s bound to happen, there is no avoiding it. One good thing about being a Correctional Officer is you are never alone. If a fight is called via radio a response team will have your back in seconds. Enough about me let’s discuss dangerous jobs.
Don't Fall Off
Believe it or not my son has one of the top five dangerous jobs. Being a roofer, he always has the potential for danger of falling off the roof and hurting himself. Worrying is a common thing if he is on a job by himself, which he sometimes is. Roofing is not only dangerous but also very taxing on your body. Wear and tear on your knees especially. All that kneeling, going up and down ladders. An element of danger is always present while up on a roof. Being aware of your surroundings is super important. Steep roofs are terrible and an accident waiting to happen for a roofer. A harness is necessary for safety. This job is not one I would choose.
Who Wants to Fly?
Airline pilot is another dangerous job. Taking your life in your hands every time you get behind the controls. Not knowing if something will fail while in the air, creating an emergency landing is something not to be made light of. Not a fan of flying. I've done it twice in my life and that is enough for me. Especially in today's world with the twin towers and constant chaos going on in this world. I’ll leave flying to those who enjoy it. For me it is a total loss of control, you give your life over to the pilot. It’s in his hands. Something I’m not comfortable with. I’d rather be in control of my own life. If I’m going to die it will not be in an airplane.
Falling Trees
Logging is another dangerous job. Self-explanatory really. Who wants a tree to fall on them? Helmets are required, although I’m not sure how much help they would be if a tree is falling toward you. Loggers have to take extreme care and always be on their toes. There have been people found dead because they were out in the woods by themselves falling trees. Don’t let it happen to you. Perhaps that is the reasoning behind the expense of a tree taken down by experts in your yard. It isn't cheap and there is a reason for that. No thank you to this job.
No Better Men or Women
Firefighting is a dangerous job, if you’ve ever been close to a huge fire, you will know why. The smoke alone from a fire can render you unconscious. Leaving you vulnerable to the fire itself. Firefighters have been known to lose their life when surrounded by a fire with no way out. The heat alone can be daunting and impenetrable. I cannot imagine being in the thick of a raging fire with no way out. What a hopeless, horrible situation. California and Canada are known for fires. In California fire spreads quickly and lasts forever it seems. Air quality lessens, homes are lost, people evacuated. It is a chain of events happening in the worst possible way.
Underground Miner
This dangerous job has no perks as far as I can see. Danger is its middle name. Traveling deep underground, trying to stabilize the tunnels so there are no collapses is not always successfully done. Ask any miner who has been through a collapse and has survived. The terror they must experience has to be life altering. The vast darkness would be electrifyingly scary. Putting your hand in front of your face and seeing only blackness has to affect your mind. This job, to me, would be the most dangerous. Heading down underground and working all day would be claustrophobic. An unidentified noise would send me into a tailspin. Not knowing if I’d ever see the light of day would make a workday seem endless.
Law Enforcement seems like a cakewalk compared to the above jobs. People in all walks of life do these jobs.
I say hats off to you, I’m finding out I’m not much of a risk taker.
Retirement sounds pretty good!
