Waitressing

If you waitress for a living, you depend on tips. Normally waitresses do not make great wages, so tips make up for that. I’ve never wanted to waitress for a living, but I have friends that do. It isn’t easy work, dealing with the public is never easy. Having a bright, bubbly personality helps out tremendously. Who wants to tip someone who isn’t friendly or courteous? You need to be if you want to serve people.

For me, waitressing is not something I’d want to do. I’d be afraid of spilling something on someone. Especially hot coffee, soup, or an entire meal. I can see it happening. I’m better off left in the kitchen making the meal than serving it.

Did I Get it Right

Taking down people's orders, making sure you have everything correct. It seems like a giant headache. If their food gets to them and it isn’t what they wanted, then watch out. Some people are not the politest. Who am I kidding? Most people are not polite. My husband is one who will not send food back or say anything bad about the meal. He suffers through it in silence. Afraid if he says anything someone would spit in his food as they prepare it once again. So he eats it. However, they fix it, it's good enough for him. I’m not big on sending food back either, if it’s edible I’ll eat it. Gary and I don’t like to make waves, or cause trouble. We don’t go out to eat that often so we don’t run across an uncomfortable situation like that.

You Can Only Try

Working in a restaurant now I can see all the hard work that goes into a waitress job. A table of six comes in, they eat, chat, and are in no hurry to leave. The restaurant closes at nine. They are still there at eight fifty-five, get up to leave at nine and leave a dollar tip on an $80.00 dollar order. The service was great, there were no problems, so why leave a tip like that? It’s a slap in the face to the person serving them. They wonder if perhaps they did something wrong but cannot figure out what that would have been. They are not the problem; some people just suck at tipping.

Overtippers

If anything, Gary and I over tip. We tip too much. But we appreciate the service and know how hard their job is. We can relate. We both know what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet. So, if we can help out, we do.

Some people don’t tip at all. I am not quite sure what the reasoning behind that is. Maybe they think the server doesn’t deserve a tip. Or maybe they just don’t care. No consideration, no empathy, just a smug I’m better than you and don’t you forget it attitude. I’ve run across people that think that way in my life. They think leaving a tip is beneath them, so they don’t do it.

Empathy Goes a Long Way

You never know what a person is going through in their life. Why not be friendly, and engaging? Include a great conversation with their meal. A smile, a wave, a “have a nice day” will get you further than a frown and an unfriendly attitude.

Think about that the next time you sit down at a restaurant. Whoever is serving you needs to make a living. Leaving a big tip can make their day. Make their life a little bit easier.

Who knows, maybe one day you will be in their shoes.

How do you want to be treated?

Think twice before you stiff a waitress and walk out without leaving a tip.
