Eggs and More Eggs

My sister Tammy and her husband Troy live in the country. They have a ton of land to explore, build, or do whatever the heck they want to with it. I envy her for that. She knows this and accepts this; she tells me this is her and Troy’s dream house. It would be mine also. Although a fixer upper house can be a drain. Just think about the land. I believe she told me they have 80 acres. Oh my, the possibilities. They are endless.

Tammy is an animal person, the same as me. They have dogs. I don’t believe they have cats, but don’t quote me on it. One thing she does have is chickens. She loves her chickens. She has a dress with chickens on it. Is loving chickens a thing? It is for Tammy. She doesn’t kill them for food. She has laying hens; she has some beautiful chickens. She sent me photos. She also has your garden variety chicken, those are her “Karen’s”. The first time she said this it cracked me up. She sent me a photo with one of her “Karen’s”, she said this one stopped by to say good morning. Oh my God, I lost it for a while. It was too much. After giggling for over half an hour by myself, I decided I needed to write this story. About Tammy, and her love for her chickens.

Chickens Why?

When and where did this love for chickens begin for Tammy? This I do not know. I do know she is a lover of animals. So, it isn’t surprising. Maybe it was something she lacked in her childhood. She needs something to mother and fuss over. Or maybe, just maybe it started as an adult for her. She has the room; she has the space. Why not have chickens? I’m not sure what all is involved with having chickens. I do know they have to be fed. I know there is such a thing as free-range chickens. I’m not sure if that’s what Tammy has or not. She had one that was killed not that long ago. So, I believe she would need to keep them penned up. Poor thing. Tammy was pretty traumatized by the entire thing. I’m sure they need to be watered as well. Not one of us can live without water. Tammy is most likely out there morning and night. Feeding, giving them water. Maybe talking to them. I know I would be. Tammy is a lot like me so I’m almost positive she talks to them.

Eggs

Eggs, eggs, and more eggs. She gets eggs from her chickens. I know she has people she sells these eggs to. She tells me she isn’t getting rich from it. But I do think it covers her cost for feed. It must be nice to get eggs (not from the grocery store). Fresh eggs, so much better for you.

It's Cold Outside

I’m thinking the wintertime must be kind of a pain. How do you keep their water from freezing up? Heading out into the cold to feed and give them water. Knowing Tammy, I’m sure she doesn’t mind a bit. Except when it’s below zero. Are their living quarters heated? Surely it must be otherwise they’d freeze right?

Hobby or Business

People have all kinds of hobbies they love. My sister Tammy has a hobby farm, and her hobby happens to be chickens. I’m not sure if it’s a hobby or a business for her? She loves the chickens, and I am quite sure she has names for them all. Maybe, except for the “Karen’s”.  Just thinking about it makes me giggle.

I do need to get over there for a visit. I’d love to explore their property. It would be heaven.

Maybe just maybe she’d introduce me to one of her “Karen’s”.
